China and America see each other as geopolitical competitors, so both sides naturally focus on their differences in culture, society, and politics. But are they really that different? As the two largest economies and most influential countries in the world, they must share some things? Right? Frank, your humble host for this club, is an ABC who grew up in the US, has lived and worked in China for 15 years, is a sociologist, and expert in global politics and sees one of his life's purposes as bridging the gap between China and the world. _x000D_

In this club, we'll take a comparative and historical view. Sometimes we see a country (any country) more clearly from an outsider’s perspective, outside in both time and space. When it comes to China and the US, both societies are large, diverse, and ambitious. Both are seen as crass, entrepreneurial, and boisterous, and as the behemoths of their respective civilizations (Western and East Asian). They have historically exerted a magnetic pull on those civilizations. Both rose in the international system at times when dominated by others. And both have a unique and compelling political origin story that propels their global ambitions. _x000D_
