When did looking older become something we're supposed to be ashamed of? Why can a new wrinkle, a changing body or the first silver hairs feel strangely alarming, even though they're evidence of something completely ordinary: we've lived long enough to get them? Join Damon, a university professor and poet based in Seattle, for an open and down-to-earth discussion about our complicated relationship with ageing. We'll look at how advertising, social media, beauty standards and modern wellness culture shape the way we see older faces and bodies, and ask what actually happens to us as we age, physically, psychologically and socially. Are we genuinely afraid of getting older, or are we afraid of what we've been taught getting older means?
We'll also get practical. What does the science actually say about ageing skin, and how much can all those creams, powders and expensive treatments really do? When does taking care of ourselves become fighting an impossible battle against time? And perhaps most importantly, can we change the way we experience ageing itself? We'll explore how wrinkles and silver hair might be seen not as defects to erase, but as visible evidence of experience, resilience and a life being lived. This won't be a conversation pretending that getting older is wonderful all the time. There are real losses and difficult changes too. Instead, we'll talk honestly about whether it's possible to care about how we look while also making peace with change, and maybe even learn to genuinely like some of the person we see getting older in the mirror.
