You don't need to be a gamer to join this club, but an interest in the human mind would be great.
What is the psychology of games? What do game designers and developers need to do to make successful products?
What makes a game good now?
Why do some games hook us for years while others, technically impressive, beautifully made, get abandoned after a few hours? Is it the story, the mechanics, the world, the rewards… or something much more psychological going on underneath? And why do the same design choices feel irresistible to some people and completely empty to others?
In this discussion, guided by Mike, a game designer and developer who’s worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, we’ll look at games through the lens that matters most today: human psychology.
Let's unpack what actually goes into modern games, why people play (or don’t), why they stay (or quietly leave), and how story, characters, systems, rewards, and worlds work together, or fail to. Along the way, we’ll zoom out and connect game design to something much bigger: how people think, what motivates us, and why the same principles decide the success or failure of products far beyond games. This discussion will be smart, fun, and surprisingly revealing, even if you don’t consider yourself a “gamer.”
