In this Watch & Talk session, hosted by Noah, drama teacher, theatre performer, and long-time lover of the stage, we’ll explore scenes from the Broadway phenomenon Rent, one of the most important and controversial musicals of the last few decades. You don’t need to know anything about Broadway (or even like musicals) to join. We’ll give you the context you need, then watch key moments together and unpack what made this show so powerful, and why some critics still debate it today.

 

Rent changed musical theatre by bringing rock music, youth culture, poverty, friendship, and the AIDS crisis onto the mainstream stage in the 1990s. It helped redefine what Broadway could sound and feel like. But is it still great? Does it age well? Does its passion outweigh its weaknesses? And at the end, in true theatre spirit, we’ll all sing one of its iconic songs together.
