What would you do if telling the truth caused more harm than lying? Is it ever right to sacrifice one innocent person to save five? Should we judge an action by its consequences, by the intentions behind it, or by principles that should never be broken?
Let's debate!
Clayton, an internationally award-winning debate coach and debater, will be your host for a respectful battle of ideas built around some of philosophy’s most fascinating moral dilemmas. Along the way, we’ll bring in thinkers such as Aristotle, Kant, John Stuart Mill and others. All of them are brilliant people who spent their lives thinking about right and wrong and still managed to disagree spectacularly with one another. You’ll choose sides, challenge their arguments and decide whose philosophy survives when confronted with messy real life.
But this isn’t a philosophy lecture. You’ll debate. As the dilemmas become more difficult and the room divides, Clayton will introduce strategies and tactics used by champion debaters: how to build a persuasive case quickly, expose weaknesses in an opponent’s reasoning, anticipate counterarguments, frame an issue to your advantage and respond effectively under pressure. You may find yourself defending a position you completely disagree with — and discovering that you can make a surprisingly convincing argument for it. No philosophy or debating experience is needed. Come ready to think, argue, change your mind, make someone else change theirs, and discover what happens when the world’s greatest ethical thinkers meet competitive debate.
