Why are the streets of Paris on fire? And are these protests achieving anything, or just causing chaos? When people take to the streets, what makes governments listen, and when does protest lead to disruption without meaningful change? Join Adam, a politics and history expert, for a discussion beginning with protests and unrest in France. We’ll explore what people are demanding, how serious the situation is beyond the most dramatic headlines, and whether demonstrations, strikes or riots bring those demands closer to being met. How do we distinguish between different forms of protest, and how does the way they’re reported shape our sympathies?
From there, we’ll look back at protests in recent history and explore Western Europe’s longstanding cultures of public dissent. Why does taking to the streets become an accepted political tool in some societies, and what determines whether a movement succeeds, fades or provokes a backlash? Together, we’ll examine examples, compare outcomes and discuss what counts as meaningful change... and for whom. All opinions and questions are welcome, and no knowledge of news or history is necessary: Adam will guide us through the background. Expect a culturally rich, open-minded conversation about public pressure, political power and how societies negotiate change.
