How much risk is right for you? That might be one of the most important questions you ask yourself. And the answer will probably change throughout your life. How will it change?
How much risk should we take to get what we want? Play it too safe, and we may spend our lives wondering what could have happened; push too far and the consequences can be enormous. But there isn't one correct level of risk for everybody. Join Edward, a geological engineer and motorsport enthusiast, live from Manchester, for a discussion about how we judge risk, why some people seem naturally drawn towards it, and how we decide when something is worth the gamble. From changing careers and starting businesses to relationships, money, travel and personal ambitions, we'll ask a deceptively difficult question: How much risk is right for me?
To explore it, Edward will take us into the extreme world of motorsport, where decisions about risk can play out dramatically and sometimes in seconds. We'll meet racers who pushed themselves and their machines beyond ordinary limits, examine what they gained and what they paid, and use their stories as a springboard for discussing the much less spectacular, but equally real, calculations we make in our own lives. No motorsport knowledge or interest is required: the racing provides the stories; the discussion is about us. Why do we admire risk-takers? Is courage sometimes just recklessness that happened to work out? And when things go wrong, does that mean taking the risk was a mistake? Expect some remarkable stories and a conversation that might challenge how you think about your own comfort zone.
