Tonight's Watch & Talk club will happen outdoors on the undeniably cool and comfy rooftop terrace of Lark Liquid Lab.
What makes someone willingly climb a 3,000-foot rock wall with no ropes, no harness, and no room for error? What kind of mindset allows a person to stay calm in situations that would terrify almost everyone else? In this Watch & Talk session, we’ll dive into scenes from the incredible documentary Free Solo and explore the psychology of adventure: how adventurers think, how they relate to fear, risk, focus, and freedom, and what the rest of us can learn from them. At the centre is Alex Honnold, the world-famous climber best known for completing the first-ever free solo climb of El Capitan in Yosemite, one of the most astonishing athletic achievements ever filmed.
Hosted by Leon, a psychologist and lover of adventure sports, this session goes far beyond climbing. Together, we’ll discuss how the “adventurer mindset” differs from the average way of moving through life, why some people are drawn toward uncertainty instead of away from it, and how elements of that mindset can actually help us in everyday life—from decision-making and confidence to dealing with fear and discomfort. Expect a smart, inspiring, and deeply engaging conversation filled with breathtaking scenes, psychology, and big questions about what humans are truly capable of.
