Description
▼When does a crush become an obsession? And what...
When does a crush become an obsession? And what actually happens inside our minds when wanting someone starts to take over? What is borderline personality disorder? Join Leon, a psychologist, for a Watch & Talk exploring scenes from the new and hugely popular film Obsession, using its darkly funny take on romance as a starting point for understanding the psychology of obsessive partners. Why can rejection sometimes make desire stronger instead of killing it? Why do people idealise someone they barely know, read enormous meaning into tiny signals, become intensely jealous or behave in ways that seem completely irrational from the outside? The film exaggerates these behaviours for comedy and drama, but beneath the jokes are patterns that can be surprisingly recognisable, from the ordinary crush that goes much too far to genuinely unhealthy fixation.
As we watch, Leon will help us unpack what may be happening underneath these behaviours: attachment, reward and anticipation, fear of abandonment, idealisation, jealousy, emotional regulation and the stories our brains create about other people. We'll also look carefully at borderline personality disorder, what it actually is, how difficulties around relationships and abandonment can sometimes appear within it, and why it's important not to casually diagnose someone simply because they're intense, jealous or obsessive. You don't need to have seen the film or know anything about psychology to join. Expect funny scenes, uncomfortable recognition, plenty of discussion and a chance to look beneath behaviour we casually call “crazy” and ask a much more interesting question: what makes a human mind become so completely fixated on another person?
Let's sit back with good friends in comfy chairs and watch scenes from a film that everybody's talking about right now for very good reason. And, of course, let's have a deep, fun and smart discussion about our mutual cinematic journey!
