For this Watch & Talk session, Anji has chosen scenes from different films for us to dive in to the idea of loving what we know will hurt us, and we often do it anyway. Is it worth it? Is it worth not doing it?
Why are we sometimes drawn most powerfully to the people and things that hurt us? Why can obsession feel like love, control like intimacy, and emotional chaos more “real” than stability? And when something is breaking us apart, why can letting go feel even more unbearable than staying? Cinema has always been fascinated by this darker contradiction in human nature, the strange places where love, pain, desire and destruction become difficult to separate. Perhaps we don’t simply fear pain. Perhaps sometimes we need it to convince ourselves that what we’re feeling is real.
Join Anji, Cannes-nominated director and endlessly curious observer of film and the human condition, for a journey into some of cinema’s most unsettling explorations of emotional addiction and intimacy. Through selected scenes from Lars von Trier’s Antichrist, Michael Haneke’s Caché, Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession and more if time allows, we’ll explore relationships that consume, desire that becomes obsession, and the uncomfortable territory where intimacy begins to reveal something darker about ourselves. These films don’t give us easy answers—and neither will we look for them. Instead, Anji will guide an open, thoughtful conversation about the difficult emotions they expose and why cinema can make them visible in ways ordinary language sometimes cannot. No knowledge of these films, filmmaking or psychology is necessary... just curiosity, an open mind and a willingness to look at one of the stranger contradictions of being human.
Let's sit back with good friends in comfy chairs and watch scenes from films that continue to inspire filmmakers, lovers and dreamers around the world. Let's discuss them in depth with a brilliant director, and let's have a conversation we'll never forget.
