Description
▼What if winning an argument has less to do with...
What if winning an argument has less to do with being right, and more to do with controlling the question? Can you persuade someone without ever actually proving your point? And where is the line between brilliant communication and manipulation? In this Watch & Talk, Davie will take us into Thank You for Smoking, the wickedly smart, funny and very dark satire about Nick Naylor, a charismatic tobacco lobbyist whose job is essentially to defend the indefensible. Nick doesn't necessarily have better facts than his opponents, but he understands framing, language, audiences and the strange mechanics of persuasion better than almost anyone around him.
We'll watch some of the film's sharpest scenes and use them to explore How To Win An Argument, not in an academic debate, but in the messy real world. How do skilled persuaders reframe a question they can't answer? Why is understanding your audience sometimes more important than having another fact? When should you attack an argument, and when should you change the battlefield completely? And can you recognise when somebody is doing all of this to you? Expect clever arguments, questionable ethics, deep thinking and plenty of laughs as we pull apart the techniques hiding underneath the dialogue. You may not leave as dangerously persuasive as Nick Naylor, but you should leave a little better at arguing, listening, spotting rhetorical tricks and understanding how people actually change each other's minds.
Let's sit back with good friends in comfy chairs, watch scenes from a one of the smartest and most darkly comedic films of the last few decades, and, of course, let's have a deep and fun discussion about our mutual cinematic journey!
