What happens when love, commitment and desire don't fit neatly inside the rules we've created for relationships? Join Kizito, a professional and decorated filmmaker, for a Watch & Talk exploring scenes from the very recent film The Invite — a sharp, funny and unusually fearless look at marriage, intimacy and the complicated things people want from one another. The film ventures into territory we often treat as taboo, from unconventional relationships and changing desires to jealousy, honesty and the gap between what we're supposed to want and what we actually feel. What's groundbreaking is how naturally it treats these uncomfortable subjects: not as strange exceptions to ordinary human life, but as messy, recognisable parts of the human experience.
And for all its intelligence, The Invite also understands something important: human beings are pretty ridiculous when it comes to love and sex. We create rules, break them, contradict ourselves, misunderstand each other and somehow expect everyone involved to remain perfectly rational. We'll watch selected scenes together and use them to discuss what commitment really means, whether relationships need conventional boundaries to survive, how much honesty intimacy can handle, and why our romantic ideals so often collide with our actual behaviour. You don't need to have seen the film, or to have much relationship experience at all. Whether you're single, partnered, experienced, inexperienced, conventional, unconventional or simply curious about how humans attempt this bizarre thing called love, come ready to watch, laugh, question and talk.
Let's sit back with good friends in comfy chairs and watch scenes from a film that turns the way we see relationships on its head and does it intelligently and hilariously. And, of course, let's have a fun, smart and deep discussion about our mutual journey!
