What did teenage life look and sound like before TikTok? And what does it look like now? Join Leon, a psychologist and musician, for a Music & Talk exploring how teenage life has changed from millennials to Gen Z to Gen Alpha, through the music of Avril Lavigne. With her skate shoes, ties and gloriously unapologetic attitude, Avril brought vulnerability, defiance and pop-punk energy into mainstream culture, reaching listeners around the world. Her songs became a soundtrack for many millennials, also called Gen Y, born roughly between 1981 and 1996. Then came Gen Z, broadly born between 1997 and 2012, who grew up alongside social media, and Gen Alpha, born from around the early 2010s, whose teenage years are unfolding in an increasingly digital world. The boundaries overlap, but what can these generations reveal about the changing experience of growing up?
Listening to selected songs, we’ll discuss what has changed, and what remains familiar, about friendship, first love, belonging and refusing to fit in. Has moving from shared music channels to personalised feeds changed how teenagers discover their identities? Has social media given them more freedom to express themselves, or more pressure to perform? And does rebellion mean something different when everyone has an audience? Leon will bring psychological insight and a musician’s ear to a lively conversation about music, youth culture and the emotions that connect generations. No knowledge of Avril or her music is necessary: come for memorable songs, thoughtful discussion and a chance to revisit your teenage self while better understanding somebody else’s.
