Was that short reply rude, rushed—or perfectly friendly? Does a missing emoji change the meaning? And could the exact same text mean something completely different coming from someone with a Western or Eastern cultural background? Join Emile, director of operations at the Canadian Chamber in Shanghai, for a lively discussion about language, texts and the misunderstandings hiding in everyday exchanges. We’ll explore how tone, wording and cultural expectations shape what we think someone means—from what counts as polite or direct to how we express warmth, disagreement or hesitation.
Together, we’ll compare how we read the same conversations and messages, discovering where our interpretations agree—and where they go in completely different directions. Cultural background can offer useful clues, but how do we avoid assuming everyone from the same culture communicates alike? Share a misunderstanding of your own, listen to others’ experiences, and explore ways to check someone’s meaning without making the conversation awkward. No specialist knowledge is necessary; anyone who has ever stared at a message wondering “Did they mean that?” has something to bring. Expect laughter, surprising perspectives and practical ideas for asking better questions before jumping to conclusions.
