How has the theme of loneliness been portrayed by great Western artists? And what does that say about us? About history? About psychology? About who we were then and now?

 

What does loneliness look like when it’s painted instead of spoken? Is it silence, distance, boredom, longing? Or is it something harder to name? In this discussion, we’ll look closely at four influential Western paintings that each approach loneliness from a different psychological angle: works by Edward Hopper, Edvard Munch, Toulouse-Lautrec’s At the Moulin Rouge, and a modern piece by Stańczyk. You don’t need any background in art, just curiosity and a willingness to look slowly.

 

Together, we’ll explore what these paintings might be saying about isolation, alienation, intimacy, and inner life. What do you see? What do you feel? What do you think the artist was trying to capture? And how much of that meaning comes from the viewer instead?
