You open an app for one minute and somehow you're still scrolling twenty minutes later. You try to cancel a subscription and suddenly the button seems impossible to find. A hotel has "ONLY 1 ROOM LEFT!" and Duolingo's sad little owl is making you feel guilty for missing Spanish practice. Coincidence? Probably not. In this fascinating discussion hosted by Popcorn Club tech expert Omar, we'll explore dark patterns—the clever design techniques apps and websites use to influence what we click, buy, continue, share and come back for. We'll uncover ideas like the Roach Motel, confirmshaming and fake scarcity, and ask just how deliberately our digital environments are engineered to push our psychological buttons.
We'll also look at perhaps the most familiar trick of all: infinite scroll, the simple design feature that removed the natural moment when we might otherwise decide to stop. Why are these techniques so effective even when we know they're being used? Where is the line between good design, clever marketing and manipulation? And, most importantly, once you understand the tricks, can you become harder to manipulate? Expect real examples, surprising psychology, plenty of laughs and a slightly uncomfortable new perspective on the apps you use every day. You may never look at a "LIMITED TIME OFFER," a crying cartoon mascot or the bottomless WeChat feed quite the same way again.
