In this club, we'll learn to play a classic game and use the principles of game theory to use it for international relations simulations. This will be epic!

What happens when there is no higher authority to enforce the rules between competing powers? Who do you trust, when should you cooperate, and when does being too cooperative simply make somebody else stronger? Join Clayton for a highly interactive introduction to game theory and international relations — played through the board game Catan. You'll learn the game from scratch and then negotiate, trade, compete for scarce resources and decide when to cooperate or pursue your own interests. No knowledge of Catan, game theory or international relations is needed; in fact, discovering these ideas through playing the game is the whole point.

Once the game is underway, we'll start looking at what everyone is actually doing. Why did alliances form? Who gained bargaining power and why? When did trade benefit both sides, and when did inequality make cooperation harder? Could someone use resources to coerce another player? And can you ever completely trust an ally when ultimately you're both trying to win? Clayton will connect what happens around the table to some of the biggest ideas in international relations, including realism vs. liberalism, anarchy, coercion, alliances, inequality and bargaining power. Instead of learning these concepts through a lecture, you'll experience them first — then use them to understand why countries cooperate, compete, trade, threaten, negotiate and occasionally betray each other. It's part strategy game, part social experiment and part exploration of how power works when everybody needs everybody else — but nobody is entirely on the same team.
