What makes a guitarist actually great? And how can you tell, even if you don’t know much about music? Why do some musicians get written off as “pop” while quietly being respected by other musicians as something much more?

 

In this Music & Talk session, Leon, a musician and psychologist, will guide you through selected moments from Continuum by John Mayer, using them as a lens to explore whether Mayer is one of the most underrated guitarists working today. No background knowledge needed, most of the discussion isn’t about music theory, but about listening: tone, feel, restraint, emotion, and why some playing sounds “honest” while other playing sounds impressive but empty. You’ll come away with simple ideas and language that help you talk about music with confidence, spot skill without expertise, and enjoy listening more deeply, whether it’s John Mayer, or anyone else you hear next.
