▼Why do spiritual leaders have the ability to ma...
Why do spiritual leaders have the ability to make an abstract idea feel suddenly vivid, personal and impossible to forget? What tricks do they use? Is it about voice, body language, storytelling? Spoiler alert: It can all be learned and practised.
In this public speaking workshop, Violetta, a TEDx public speaking coach and a truly brilliant, fun and patient human being, will explore the techniques used by some of history's most compelling moral and inspirational spiritual speakers. You'll discover how powerful communicators transform enormous concepts like hope, forgiveness, courage and community into simple human stories that audiences can immediately understand and feel. You'll explore the parable structure, using micro-stories, metaphors and relatable situations to give an abstract message a concrete form, while also examining how rhythm, vocal modulation, pauses and body language can gradually build emotional momentum and conviction.
Then you'll put those techniques to work yourself. In the Modern Parable Challenge, you'll choose a familiar dilemma, perhaps burnout, digital distraction, loneliness or our obsession with productivity, and create a 90-second speech built around a short story or metaphor that leaves your audience with something to think about. Through an active listening exercise, your partners won't simply evaluate your vocabulary or grammatical accuracy; they'll consider something much more important: Did you make them feel the message? Under Violetta's supportive guidance, you'll practise moving beyond simply explaining ideas in English and learn how to give those ideas narrative, emotion and life — transforming yourself from someone who delivers information into someone people genuinely want to listen to.
