▼How close can we get to another person without ...
How close can we get to another person without eventually hurting each other? The Hedgehog Dilemma, a famous metaphor from philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, imagines hedgehogs trying to survive a freezing winter: move too far apart, and they suffer from the cold; move too close, and they prick each other with their spines. Human relationships can feel surprisingly similar. We want intimacy, friendship, love and the feeling of being truly known. But closeness also makes us vulnerable to rejection, disappointment, conflict and loss. Join Chris, an IELTS and communication coach whose clubs are always full of laughter and interaction, for a discussion about the strange balancing act between our need for connection and our instinct to protect ourselves.
And what exactly are our “spines”? Insecurity? Selfishness? Past experiences? Different needs? The annoying habits that only appear once you really know somebody? We'll take this wonderfully simple metaphor into romantic relationships, friendships, family, loneliness, boundaries and modern dating, asking how much independence healthy relationships actually need and whether being hurt occasionally is simply part of genuinely knowing another person. Are some of us standing too far away because we're afraid of being pricked? Are others constantly getting too close? And how much discomfort is worth accepting for warmth? There are no correct answers and no relationship expertise required, just bring your experiences, ideas and curiosity. Expect plenty of laughs, different perspectives and a deceptively simple question that may become surprisingly deep once we start talking about it.
