Fleabag is incredible, mature yet immature, brilliant and funny. You'll laugh. You might cry. You'll definitely have a deep discussion.
What do you do when something hurts too much to face directly? Make a joke? Stay busy? Intellectualise it? Have sex, pick a fight, scroll your phone... or convince yourself you’re completely fine? And does being intelligent actually make this easier? The smarter we are, the more sophisticated our ways of avoiding emotional pain can become: we can explain it, analyse it, laugh at it and build an extremely convincing argument for why we don’t need to feel it at all. But is that necessarily unhealthy? Sometimes hiding from pain helps us survive. The more interesting question may be when does protection become avoidance—and how can we tell the difference?
Join Daria, a psychological counsellor and Gestalt therapist, to watch selected scenes from an episode of Fleabag and explore what they reveal about the wonderfully complicated ways human beings protect themselves. Fleabag is hilarious, painfully intelligent and genuinely groundbreaking television, able to make you laugh at a character’s behaviour one moment and suddenly understand the hurt underneath it the next. Daria will use the scenes as starting points for an interactive, judgement-free conversation about humour, distraction, intimacy, self-awareness and the clever stories we tell ourselves to keep difficult feelings at a safe distance. You don’t need to have seen Fleabag or know anything about psychology... just come ready to watch, laugh, think and perhaps recognize a little bit of yourself along the way.
