描述
▼How much of who you are was decided before you ...
How much of who you are was decided before you were even born? If science could predict your intelligence, health, appearance and potential from your DNA, should we use it? And if your biology says you'll never be exceptional, can determination prove it wrong? In this Watch & Talk, Davie, famous for movie sessions combining deep thinking, silly jokes and somehow making you see films in a completely different light, will take us into Gattaca, the brilliant 1997 cult classic about a society where genetic engineering has transformed human life. What was futuristic science fiction when the film was released now feels remarkably close to home: we can already edit genes, screen embryos and learn increasingly powerful things about people from their DNA.
We'll watch some of Gattaca's most memorable scenes and use them to explore its central question: Are we more than our biology? If we could give our children genetic advantages, would it be wrong not to? What happens to equality when some people can afford to engineer better opportunities from birth? And how much of human achievement comes from natural ability anyway, compared with ambition, environment, luck and sheer refusal to give up? You don't need to have seen the film or know anything about genetics to join. Come for a beautifully made piece of science fiction that has become more relevant with age, and stay for a smart, funny and potentially very deep conversation about DNA, destiny and what ultimately makes us who we are.
Let's sit back with good friends in comfy chairs, watch scenes from a mind-blowing film, and, of course, let's have an unforgettable discussion about our mutual journey!
