What happens when youth, politics, desire, and cinema collide in one room? And what does it mean when a film feels less like a story and more like a fever dream about freedom itself? In this Watch & Talk session hosted by Anji, a Cannes-nominated director and filmmaker, we’ll explore The Dreamers by Bernardo Bertolucci, one of Anji’s favourite films. Set during the turbulent summer of Paris, 1968, the movie follows three young people who retreat into an apartment while revolution unfolds in the streets outside. Is their isolation a form of escape, or a different kind of rebellion? Through scenes from the film, we’ll look at how cinema becomes a language for youth, intimacy, and the seductive fantasy of living inside art.
Together we’ll discuss the film’s provocative ideas: cinema as a language of desire, the body as a form of protest, and the strange tension between revolution as an aesthetic dream and revolution as a messy reality. The Dreamers asks unsettling questions about the boundary between looking and participating, between innocence and experience, between life and the beautiful illusions we create to survive it. This Watch & Talk evening invites you to step inside that apartment with us, to close the door for a moment and ask: can cinema replace reality, or does reality always find its way back in?
