 : Slang-What it is/isn't & How to/not to use it </a>\nThis public speaking
workshop will involve the learning of immediately actionable skills\, pra
ctice\, professional feedback\, and more practice! What is slang? What isn
't slang? When does English sound natural\, and when does it quietly creat
e distance? Why do some conversations feel warm and effortless\, while oth
ers sound correct but strangely stiff? One of the biggest hidden gaps for
advanced English learners isn’t grammar or vocabulary\, it’s slang. In
this workshop\, Violetta\, a TEDx public speaking coach\, explores why un
derstanding and using slang is one of the clearest markers of true languag
e mastery and cultural understanding\, and why it’s especially challengi
ng for Chinese speakers of English. Many people either stay overly formal
and struggle to build real connection\, or try slang in the wrong moments
and unintentionally send the wrong signal. In this workshop\, we'll define
the difference between slang\, casual or informal language and just plain
being rude. We'll dive into why it evolves so quickly\, when to use it an
d\, just as importantly\, when not to use it. Through clear examples\, cul
tural context\, and practical frameworks\, Violetta will help you turn a c
ommon pain point into a real strength. You’ll walk away better able to s
ound natural without trying too hard\, culturally aware without being awkw
ard\, and confident navigating English in professional\, social\, and publ
ic speaking situations where tone matters as much as words.
