DESCRIPTION:<a href="http://popcornclubshanghai.com/event/watch-talk-sing-r
 ent-a-great-yet-flawed-musical-45273/register">Watch\, Talk & Sing: Rent -
A Great Yet Flawed Musical </a>\nWhat makes a musical unforgettable? Is i
t the music\, the story\, the politics\, the characters?Or the way it capt
ures a generation at a specific moment in time? And can something be both
groundbreaking and flawed at the same time? In this Watch & Talk session\,
hosted by Noah\, drama teacher\, theatre performer\, and long-time lover
of the stage\, we’ll explore scenes from the Broadway phenomenon Rent\,
one of the most important and controversial musicals of the last few decad
es. You don’t need to know anything about Broadway (or even like musical
 s) to join. We’ll give you the context you need\, then watch key moments
together and unpack what made this show so powerful\, and why some critic
s still debate it today. Rent changed musical theatre by bringing rock mus
 ic\, youth culture\, poverty\, friendship\, and the AIDS crisis onto the m
ainstream stage in the 1990s. It helped redefine what Broadway could sound
and feel like. But is it still great? Does it age well? Does its passion
outweigh its weaknesses? Together\, we’ll critique it like smart audienc
es do\, looking at storytelling\, character choices\, emotional manipulati
on\, and cultural impact. And at the end\, in true theatre spirit\, we’l
l all sing one of its iconic songs together. No experience required\; just
curiosity\, a willingness to look closely\, and maybe the courage to sing
a little louder than you expected.
Watch
Rent
