DESCRIPTION:<a href="http://popcornclubshanghai.com/event/same-event-differ

\, Different Stories: How the News Shapes What We Believe</a>\nHow can the
same event become a story of freedom to one audience\, failure to another
\, and national pride to a third? What changes when we change the storytel
ler? Join Zevan\, a university professor fluent in five languages who is a
lways exploring news\, history and philosophy\, for a discussion about how
world events acquire different meanings depending on who tells them. From
the fall of the Berlin Wall to the thefts at the Louvre and involving Ren
oir artworks\, we’ll explore what happened\, how different news sources
depicted it\, and what their choices of words\, images and emphasis invite
us to believe. Together\, we’ll compare accounts\, share interpretation
s and consider how these stories shape our perceptions of countries\, cult
ures and people. What gets highlighted\, what gets left out\, and why migh
t one version feel more convincing to us? Can two accounts offer different
perspectives without either being false? And when does framing become mis
leading? No familiarity with the events or knowledge of history is necessa
ry: Zevan will introduce the background so everyone can join in. Expect an
open-minded\, culturally rich conversation that builds your knowledge of
the world while helping you recognise the assumptions you bring to its sto
 ries.
