Who deserves what? And why? Is money a neutral tool, or does it quietly shape our ideas of fairness, freedom, and responsibility? Socialism versus capitalism: is one more ethical? More realistic? More fair?
In this discussion, we’ll take a step back from headlines and hot takes to explore some of the biggest questions around justice and wealth: is it ethical to own property, where should the limits of inequality be, and what do we actually mean when we talk about “fairness” in economic life?
Hosted by Dr Sam, a PhD in Philosophy specialising in economic justice and a senior lecturer at the Sino-British College, this session will bring classic debates to life by placing thinkers in conversation with each other: Marx and Locke, capitalism and socialism, competing ideas of value, labour, and ownership. Using short quotes and concrete examples, we’ll connect these big ideas to everyday realities: housing, work, opportunity, and how different societies answer these questions in very different ways today. Let's have a deep, fascinating, and accessible discussion that helps you see money, justice, and your own life through a sharper philosophical lens.
